Suzanne Crane
My work in clay reflects my love of the play between symmetry and asymmetry, between the manmade and the natural, between the shiny and the matte, and between the minute differences from one leaf to another from the same plant, tree, or vine.
I grew up among a family of naturalists, so my delight in taking walks in the woods to gather botanical specimens to use in that day's clay work makes sense. My delight in making functional and semi-functional objects out of clay using the potter's wheel is more mysterious, but I am grateful for having stumbled upon a calling.
I work in a buff-colored mid-range stoneware clay body, with a porcelain slip. I use a mix of glazes, most my own recipes and some commercial, and I fire to cone 7 in oxidation.
